When Susan Zipkin, director of Research Finance for Radiology, heard about a new leadership program available to managers at BWH, she jumped at the opportunity to participate.
“The material the class focused on was completely tailored to managers at BW/F, and to be able to apply things as I learn them is an opportunity I didn’t want to pass up,” said Zipkin.
Now, Zipkin and nine other managers from divisions and departments across BWH are in the final phase of Leadership Competencies for Managers, a nine-month intensive program that gives the next generation of leaders the key business and competency-based skills they need to develop as leaders.
Leadership Competencies for Managers is set up in three phases: the assessment phase, the skill building phase and the practical application phase. A variety of learning activities are built into the cohort members’ calendars throughout the year, beginning with a full day retreat and ending with a final presentation to management. Activities also include four Northeastern University workshops and 20 learning lunches that feature skill building discussions, guest speakers and the occasional panel discussion.
“We spend a lot of time during the course talking about team dynamics,” said Lianne Crossette, Organizational Development & Learning consultant for Human Resources. “By the third phase, participants have had many chances to use these communication skills.”
The final phase is the practical application—participants use their newly honed skills in a series of group projects, culminating with a final project that is presented to senior leaders.
“It’s time-consuming and requires a commitment,” said Zipkin. “But I would definitely recommend it. Any aspiring leader can get something out of this course.”
Enrollment for the Leadership Competencies for Managers 2011 session is now open. The ideal applicant is a manager in good standing who is committed to the mission and vision of BW/F, someone who has been at the Brigham for at least two years and serving in a management role for at least one year. Candidates must also have direct reports. To be considered, candidates must complete an application and their leaders must submit a nomination by the end of January.
