Sara E. Russell, MD, received the 2011 Bernard Lown Award for Excellence in Teaching at BWH in a May 9 ceremony at Harvard Medical School. Named for Bernard Lown, MD, senior BWH physician, professor of Cardiology Emeritus at HSPH and the founder of the Lown Cardiovascular Center and Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation, the award was established in 2010 by BWH President Elizabeth Nabel, MD, to celebrate physicians who are outstanding clinical teachers.
Russell is lauded by faculty, residents and students for her extraordinary ability for training the next generation of clinicians in surgery and other fields.
“Dr. Sara Russell is without question an inspiring teacher. She consistently sought out ways to include us in surgery and clinic in ways that no other attending was able to do,” wrote a group of third year medical students in a letter of recommendation. “She prioritizes teaching and is a very gifted mentor and surgeon.”
Russell received her undergraduate degree from Tufts University and her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed her internship in Surgery in 1996 at BWH, where she remained through 2004 for her residency in Surgery, research fellowship in gastrointestinal immunology and Surgical Oncology fellowship. In 2004, she joined BWH’s Department of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in the Divisions of Gastrointestinal Oncology, Cutaneous Oncology and Melanoma.
Russell is an active member of several committees at BWH and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, including the Ethics Committee. She developed and teaches the Ethics Curriculum for the Surgical Core Curriculum, and is also involved in various teaching and mentorship activities with the third and fourth year medical students.
