The BWH physicians, selected by “The Academy”
To better advance the education and training of future physicians, Harvard Medical School (HMS) has created “The Academy,” an entity to support the educational activities of HMS’ most effective and innovative teachers. The Academy is currently defining its work scope to be carried out by its first-year membership, which was recently selected from a pool of 250 applicants.
In addition to providing funding to many of its members, the Academy will work to advance the educational mission of HMS by creating new opportunities for all faculty to improve their teaching, advocating on behalf of the entire teaching faculty, targeting new resources to support teaching activities throughout HMS, and fueling innovation in education.
“The creation of the Academy signals a renewed commitment to the importance of the educational mission of HMS,” said George Thibault, MD, director of the Academy and vice president of Clinical Affairs at Partners, who along with the other members, will continue to work to improve the professional lives and skills of HMS’ teaching faculty and to foster educational innovation that will benefit all its students and trainees.
The Academy’s mission is three-fold:
- To support the educational activities and enhance the teaching skills of its members, who are recognized as committed, effective and innovative teachers at HMS.
- To support the educational activities of, enhance the skills of, and providing greater recognition for the entire community of teachers at HMS.
- To support the development and implementation of innovative curriculum, educational resources and educational scholarship at HMS.
The Academy’s current membership consists of 81 scholars, 12 distinguished scholars, 9 fellows, 8 associates and 15 ex officio scholars.
To support the work of Academy members, stipends will be available to many members. In addition to stipends, endowed professorships will be created through fundraising efforts and the Academy will have an “Innovative Projects Fund” for which all faculty interested in developing new programs or carrying out education-related research will be eligable to apply.
“We envision the members to form a community of educational scholars working together to support and promote medical education throughout the medical school and the faculty. Members will not only have the privilege of being part of the Academy team, but they will become part of a larger community that has the responsibility to “give back” to HMS and its educational mission,” said Thibault.
The Academy’s administrative offices are located in Room 320 in Gordon Hall.
