The Virginia and James Hubbard Professorship in Cardiac Surgery at Harvard Medical School (HMS) has been established in honor of chief of Cardiac Surgery at BWH Lawrence H. Cohn, MD. This is the first endowed chair in Cardiac Surgery and was made possible by nearly $3 million in gifts from past and present patients, colleagues, family and friends of Dr. Cohn. A reception to celebrate Cohn’s chair was held on November 30 at HMS. The standing room only crowd listened to numerous tributes to his tireless commitment to cardiac surgery, training and research. “We are extremely honored and indebted to all our patients, colleagues and friends who have enabled us to perpetually advance the science of cardiac surgery, training and research at BWH,” said Cohn. The Virginia and James Hubbard Professorship in Cardiac Surgery is the 32nd BWH chair of the 247 endowed chairs at HMS. Cohn has been chief of Cardiac Surgery at BWH since 1987 and a full professor of surgery at HMS since 1980. He has been director of the Thoracic Surgical Training Program at BWH and Children’s Hospital and has trained more than 100 residents and fellows, including approximately 15 surgeons who have gone on to become division chiefs. His clinical interests include reconstructive valve surgery, adult congenital heart surgery and thoracic aortic pathology. Cohn is past president of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the American College of Chest Physicians.
