On Tuesday, January 16, the new and relocated Day Surgery Unit (DSU) Reception, Admitting and Recovery officially opened. The unit, designed to better meet the needs of patients and their families, includes improved access from the elevator lobbies, a more comfortable reception area and a larger family waiting room. The area now features separate male and female changing and gowned waiting areas, larger and more technologically advanced recovery bays and a step-down recovery area that ensures patient privacy and better accommodates family access to the patient. “The DSU relocation and renovation is part of a multi-phased effort to improve the care environment for our surgical patients and staff,” said John Fernandez, vice president, Surgical Services. “The teams of nurses, doctors and staff that helped design, construct, manage and staff the new DSU area deserve many thanks.” Says Jeanne Lanchester, RN, nurse manager, Day Surgery, PACU, “The area has dramatically increased in size which provides more patient privacy and confidentiality. It gives family members more room as they visit the patient after surgery. One of the staff nurses commented that the quieter, more comfortable atmosphere seemed to be promoting a smoother recovery. It's also much nicer for the staff—-more functional and appealing to the eye. Adds Lanchester, “Nancy Brooks, RN,nurse-in-charge, deserves much of the credit. She worked closely with the staff on the design of the area, incorporating their ideas, her clinical expertise, and her flair for interior design. The outcome is a beautiful, functional DSU.” The new DSU is adjacent to the current Day Surgery Family Waiting Area on L-1. Call PSU Reception at ext. 7625 for more information.
