On Jan. 5, NBC Nightly News highlighted what measures hospitals throughout the country are taking to reduce the number of patients who die as a result of prescription drug errors. (Approximately 7,000 Americans die each year.) David Bates, MD, chief of the Division of General Medicine, discussed BWH’s computerized order entry system, which has been shown to reduce the serious medication error rate by 55 percent. Robert Barbieri, MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, appeared on the Today Show on Feb. 8 to discuss his new book, 6 Steps to Increased Fertility, co-authored with Alice Domar, Ph.D., and Kevin Loughlin, MD. While high-tech medicine has helped thousands of couples become pregnant, this book focuses on simpler and more natural ways of increasing fertility. On Feb. 2, Mallika Marshall, MD, of WBZ-4, talked to Ferenc Jolesz, MD, director of BWH’s Division of MRI and the hospital’s Image-Guided Therapy Program; Ron Kikinis, MD, director of the BWH Surgical Planning Lab; and Peter Black, MD, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, about the state of the art imaging system at BWH. With this less invasive technology, surgeons are able to visualize their movements more accurately using 3D images.
