Michael Gimbrone, MD, has been named the new Chairman of BWH’s Department of Pathology. A distinguished researcher, physician and teacher, Gimbrone has been a member of the BWH medical staff since 1975. “Dr. Gimbrone provides us with uncommon leadership and an acclaimed reputation as one of the nation’s foremost pathologists and researchers,” said Jeffrey Otten, BWH President. “He is well respected throughout the hospital community and among his peers throughout the nation.” An elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences, Gimbrone has published more than 300 original research reports furthering the field of pathology. As Elise T. Friedman Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School, Gimbrone has been involved in numerous professional organizations. He has served on the editorial boards of a multitude of leading research journals, such as the American Journal of Pathology, the Journal of Experimental Pathology and Circulation Research, among others. At BWH, Gimbrone currently serves as the Vice-Chairman of Research and Academic Affairs within the hospital’s pathology department, as the Co-Director of the hospital’s Research Organization and as Director of the Center for Excellence in Vascular Biology. His major research interests are in the molecular mechanisms of vascular diseases, such as atherosclerosis. A prominent teacher, Gimbrone has lectured throughout the world and has served as a visiting professor at a number of prestigious academic medical centers. Gimbrone is a graduate of Cornell University and of Harvard Medical School. BWH’s Department of Pathology offers a broad spectrum of high-quality contemporary anatomic pathology services through the following special programs: Autopsy, Cytogenetics, Cytology, Diagnostic Molecular Biology-Molecular Oncology, Neuropathology, Surgical Pathology and Subspecialties, as well as Women’s and Perinatal Pathology.
