Bridging the Cardiology Teams at BWH and Faulkner
Leonard S. Lilly, MD has been named the chief of Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Cardiology. Working with Peter Libby, MD, chief of Cardiovascular Medicine, and Patrick O’Gara, MD, director of Clinical Cardiology, at BWH and Alberto Ramirez, MD, chief of Cardiology at Faulkner, Lilly will oversee relations between the two divisions, to provide optimal patient care and expand inpatient and ambulatory services at the Faulkner campus. “We have a rare and exciting opportunity to share the expertise of a renowned academic medical center and an outstanding community teaching hospital to serve the cardiovascular needs of our patients,” said Lilly, who looks forward to offering cardiology patients a seamless continuum of care between the institutions. In his new role, Lilly’s goals are three-fold:
continue to strengthen the relationships between the BWH and Faulkner cardiology divisions;
collaborate with Faulkner cardiologists to expand comprehensive delivery of cardiovascular services; and (Cont. on back)
contribute to the teaching of BWH house staff at Faulkner.
BW/F Cardiology will follow the lead of the other joint service lines to offer expert care in an efficient, neighborhood-like setting. “Our goal is a comprehensive center at which patients with non-tertiary cardiovascular needs receive top-quality diagnostic and therapeutic services,” said Lilly. Through his collaboration with the Faulkner and BWH cardiologists, Lilly intends to expand inpatient and ambulatory cardiology services. A brand new state-of-the-art diagnostic cardiac catheterization laboratory recently opened at Faulkner, staffed by BWH cardiologists. Other advancements will come soon in the areas of echocardiography, exercise testing and ambulatory monitoring. All progress will be geared toward matching the needs of patients from Faulkner’s local community, BWH practices and Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (HVMA), who receive care at the Faulkner campus. Lilly and his fellow Faulkner cardiologists will also move forward with the expansion of the Faulkner-based Cardiac Rehabilitation Services and the cardiovascular disease prevention programs for at-risk patients. In addition, Lilly looks forward to working closely with Stephen Wright, MD, chief of Medicine at Faulkner Hospital, to expand educational opportunities for BWH house staff rotating to Faulkner. “The top-notch personal care, comfortable atmosphere, convenient parking and neighborhood setting are just some of the features appreciated by my patients who have already received care at Faulkner,” said Lilly. Lilly enters his new role after nearly 25 years of service at BWH, where he began his career as a medical intern. In addition to his new appointment as chief of BW/F Cardiology, he will continue to attend on BWH cardiovascular services and teach at Harvard Medical School.
