The hospital’s Blood Donor Center sponsored its Third Annual Volunteer Blood Donor Recognition Dinner on June 18. Present were donors who had donated blood or sponsored a mobile blood drive at least three times in 2000.
Keynote speaker was Steven Ringer, MD, medical director of BWH’s NICU and an active blood donor, who thanked those present for their contributions and stressed the need for blood donations for the NICU’s tiniest patients.
The father of such a patient, Hartley Johnson, also spoke at the dinner. He offered a testimonial of his experience in BWH’s NICU when his son was born 16 weeks premature. After 140 days of spending time with his son in the hospital, Johnson said he now understands the need for and the importance of generous blood donors.
he highlight of the donor awards presentation was a lifetime achievement award presented to David Coyle. Coyle visited BWH’s Donor Center 53 times to supply BWH with 6.625 gallons of blood.
