With a little help from The Friends
The Friends of Brigham and Women's Hospital has played an essential role in the life of the hospital and its predecessor institutions. As times have changed, so have the Friends, and through it all, they remain as committed to the mission of the hospital and the care of patients as ever. Today, the Friends are men and women, patients, staff, physicians, donors, and friends of all ages. Their mission remains much the same as it was 100 years ago, and their evolving membership has made this enthusiastic group extremely successful. They are committed to raising awareness, promoting the hospital's mission, and raising funds with events like the annual golf tournament. Between the proceeds from Gift Shop and other sales and fundraising events, the Friends were able to award more than $300,000 in capital requests this year to areas throughout the hospital. Especially in financially challenging times, the Friends capital request program makes a fundamental impact at the hospital. Says Bea Harris-Lane, Central Transport, “We were in desperate need of close to 100 wheelchairs for patients arriving at the main entrances. The Friends's gift allowed us to get them—it was a lifesaver.” Adds Friends member and CMO Andy Whittemore, MD, “Knowing the financial challenges the hospital faces and the personal challenges my patients face, I see the essential and multifaceted role the Friends play. The Friends offers me a chance to have a direct impact on improving the hospital experience for patients in a way I don't have otherwise.” “Providing for patients and families is at the heart of all of our programs,” says Friends President Joan Crocker. “Our special events are essential to help us meet our mission as well as provide a forum for people with similar interests to meet and volunteer together. As we continue to grow and attract new and younger members, I'm certain that the Friends will make an even greater contribution during BWH's next century.” To get involved in event planning or to become a member of the Friends, call 8125.
