Approximately 130 clinical and administrative leaders from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute came together earlier this month for the first-of-its-kind Patient Safety Summit. Designed and organized by the Center for Clinical Excellence and the Patient Safety-Quality Integration Team, the meeting provided a unique opportunity for leaders to share information, concerns and approaches to pivotal patient safety issues in an open forum.
Participants were welcomed to the Summit by BWH President Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, MBA, who stressed the absolute necessity of this type of exchange as a forum for new ideas. Throughout the half-day program, speakers touched upon patient experiences, protocols and reporting systems that have been revamped to more directly impact safety.
At one point during the meeting, participants viewed a video assembled by the Risk Management Foundation that highlighted an adverse event scenario. Groups of participants were then asked to identify systematic challenges that led to the outcome.
“This type of exercise is critical to our broader understanding of the factors that most directly affect patient safety,” said Andy Whittemore, MD, chief medical officer. “I am strongly encouraged by the level of participation and the discourse that occurred throughout the event. Patient safety continues to be a top priority for this hospital.”
