David Hale, Admitting/Family Liaison Service, has a vital role at BWH. However, in his humble opinion, his work does not encompass the making of a hero. His coworkers beg to differ. Jeanne Lanchester, Recovery Room/Post Anesthesia Care Unit, nominated Hale for the honor. “At all hours of the day and evening one can see David escorting often anxious patients and their family members to the OR in his quiet, kind, and courteous manner. When he is not escorting the patients and their families, he is diligently caring for and tracking their personal belongings.” Ensuring that patients feel comfortable and their belongings are well taken care of are efforts that comprise a normal day’s work for Hale. However, those who work closely with Hale recognize his strong work ethic and admiration for his patients while carrying out such efforts. His willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty make him fit for a hero. “Hero is a very big word for anyone to wear upon their shoulders. To be considered one by others is very gratifying,” said Hale, who begins his day early, escorting patients to the pre-op area, and making sure their families and the patient’s belongings are well taken care of. . Yvonne Allen, Surgical Liaison Program, works closely with Hale. “I see first-hand the time and effort David puts into his job. He is a true team player.”
As it has in years past, BWH Bulletin will highlight monthly service heroes, who are selected from a group of staff nominated by their colleagues. Service Heroes are employees or volunteers, who exemplify service excellence by going above and beyond their jobs in helping co-workers, visitors and patients. If you have someone in mind that you’d like to nominate as a service hero, email Emily Curtis in Patient/Family Relations at eccurtis@partners.org for a nomination form.
