Starfish winners recognized in January are, from left, Richard Benner, Kenold Deronville, Peter Moisakis, Heather Cruickshank and MaryAnn J. Pottanat. Margaret White and Melinda Fennel are not pictured.
When a mom-to-be carrying triplets ran out of space in the patient refrigerator in her room, Richard Benner of Engineering came up with the perfect solution. He got this patient another refrigerator, making her stay of several weeks on Connors Center 8 more comfortable and enjoyable.
This seemingly small gesture and attention to detail gained Benner a BWH Starfish Award, as the Starfish Awards Committee recognizes BWHers who, in one form or another, exemplify the best attributes of patient care. "Richard saw a way to make one patient's stay here more comfortable, and just did it on top of everything else he does for us," said Julianne Mazzawi, RN, Connors Center 8 nurse manager who nominated Benner for the Starfish award.
Benner was one of 7 BWHers to receive an award at the January Starfish ceremony. BWH staff members are invited to nominate colleagues who go beyond expectations to ensure superb patient care. Based on their care, respect, advocacy, compassion and mentoring, Starfish winners epitomize how making a difference for every patient is worthwhile.
