Doretha “Dee” Igbo, who as a receptionist lit up Inpatient Diagnostic Radiology on L1 with her smile and bold sense of humor for the past eight years, died on Monday after battling an illness. She was 56.
“She was the light of our department and so full of life,” Jerald Wade, a manager in Inpatient Diagnostic Radiology, said. “She was always doing and saying things to make people laugh.” Wade recalled one day when Ms. Igbo entered the office and did the “Tootsie Roll” dance for all to see. “Just the way she moved. Everybody was laughing,” he said. “She was delightful.”
Ms. Igbo was originally from Sumpter, S.C., before moving to Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood. Before coming to work in the BWH Radiology Department, she worked for many years for the telephone company, Verizon and its predecessors. She was active with the Roxbury Presbyterian Church and dedicated to her family.
She is survived by three children, Evelyn Rhodes, Diana Igbo and Jeff Rhodes; her mother, Albertha Rhodes of Dorchester; three grandsons and a granddaughter.
Services for Ms. Igbo are set for Monday. Calling hours begin at 6 p.m., and the funeral service is at 7 p.m. Monday at Roxbury Presbyterian Church, 328 Warren St., Roxbury.
