More than 30 BWHers are gearing up for the first annual New England Regional Walk for Burns Walkathon to support burn survivors at BWH and around the world.
“We are committed to caring for our patients and are very excited to do so through fundraising in New England’s first annual Walkathon,” said Bohdan Pomahac, MD, associate director of the Burn Center. Pomahac and Elaine Boyle, LICSW, Burn Trauma social worker, are captains of the Brigham walkathon group, which consists of doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physical therapists, social workers and others.
The walkathon benefits the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, a national non-profit organization that provides peer support, education, collaboration and advocacy for burn survivors through a variety of programs, including Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR). BWH this fall implemented the SOAR program, through which burn patients are matched with someone who has gone through a similar experience.
Proceeds from the walkathon also support the Phoenix Society’s World Burn Congress, an annual international forum that unites burn survivors and the health professionals that care for them. Several BWH patients were able to attend this year’s congress, which was held last week in Sacramento.
“BWH is taking an active role in this walk because we want to give as many of our patients as possible a chance to participate in these support programs,” Boyle said.
The New England Regional Walk for Burns Walkathon is Sunday, Oct. 8, beginning at Artesani Park on Soldiers Field Road in Boston. If you are interested in joining the team, sponsoring a walker, or making a donation, e-mail Elaine Boyle at eboyle2@partners.org
