Departments throughout the hospital are readying to enter the hands-on portion of the HBSI initiative to improve patient care and costs.
Overseen by the Finance Department, this benchmarking effort involves the comparison of data among 538 hospitals nationwide that share information related to patient care systems and operations with the company HBSI. This data allows BWH to investigate hospitals and departments that have comparable systems and operations for improvement ideas that could be incorporated into their own areas.
Individual departments, guided by Jay Doyon, analyst, Finance Department, will carefully review information gathered from similar departments at hospitals across the nation to gauge performance and potentially adopt practices that may lead to improved efficiency in terms of patient care and costs.
“At BWH we are fortunate to have high-quality systems that are recognized nationally as such,” said Chief Operating Officer Matthew Van Vranken. “But to remain at the forefront takes constant vigilance. The HBSI effort is going to help us do so at the department level, where employees can make the greatest difference.”
This effort has evolved over the past several years from a benchmarking initiative that stemmed from HCIA, a health care information company from which data was used to identify the Top 100 Hospitals list. BWH is the only hospital in the country to have been named to that list for eight years in a row. In 1999, hospital leadership volunteered to participate in an ongoing national benchmarking program that provided participating hospitals access to the data for educational and improvement purposes.
