BWH’s Office for Minority Careers, one of the affiliated offices within the new Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, last month hosted a luncheon for Harvard Medical School’s minority students to introduce them to resources and mentors available through the Office for Minority Careers.
Christian Arbelaez, MD, MPH, associate director for the Office of Minority Careers, hosted the event, which brought together underrepresented minority medical students, residents and physicians at BWH.
Arbelaez, an attending physician in the Department of Emergency Medicine, knows firsthand the challenges minorities can face. At age 10, he and his family came to the United States from Colombia. While Arbelaez overcame many barriers, he never forgot the struggles he and his family faced, and now he serves as a national advocate for minority access to health care. In addition to his role at BWH, Arbelaez was appointed to the Sullivan Alliance to Transform America’s Health Professions, a national panel working to create a diverse and better-trained health care workforce.
Arbelaez is featured this month on the Association of American Medical Colleges Web site. Read more of his story at www.aspiringdocs.org
