The 135 members of Team Brigham have different backgrounds and sources of inspiration and motivation. What unites them is their commitment to running the Boston Marathon and raising $500,000 to support BWH community health programs. This year, 28 BWHers are part of the team. Read three of their stories below.
By nature of her profession, Erin West is interested in marathon running.
The exercise physiologist has two marathons under her belt—Chicago 2002 and 2003—and this year signed on for Boston with Team Brigham.
“I was eager to join in the cause,” said West, who has worked at BWH for two years. “The community health programs Team Brigham supports are extremely worthy causes.”
West joined the team along with her supervisor, Amy Prince, and the two are motivating each other in both training and fund raising.
“The Boston Marathon is one of the world’s most prestigious marathon races, and it’s a privilege to be part of it,” West said. “I can’t wait to see the crowds and feel the excitement on race day.”
It’s Amy Prince’s first marathon, but she’s already hooked.
“The marathon will be incredible, but the build up beforehand is just as good,” said Prince, who joined the team along with Erin West. The two run together once a week and keep each other on target with training.
Besides reaching a personal goal by running the marathon, Prince also is serving as a good role model for patients and colleagues. “Everyday, we tell patients to exercise and take care of their bodies,” she said. “This is practicing what I preach to patients.”
Running to raise money for community health programs makes the experience even more worthwhile, Prince said. “I’m really glad the hospital does this,” she said. “It gives people the opportunity to take part in something meaningful.”
Jesse Welsh has plenty of support in training for the upcoming Boston Marathon. Welsh’s older brother, Max, joined Team Brigham along with her.
“I never thought I’d run the Boston Marathon,” said Welsh, who enjoyed running in college. “But it’s a good opportunity for my brother and I to run together.”
To prepare, the Welshes plan to run a half marathon this weekend in Washington, D.C., where Max, an experienced marathon runner, lives. They also are tackling their fund raising together by sending out letters to mutual friends and family.
“I love working at the hospital and would do anything to support it,” Welsh said.
