BWH Engineers have been working since late 2005 to save energy while keeping hospital buildings bright. The lighting retrofit project is in the finishing stages at 221 Longwood Ave. and is well underway at the main campus.
“The 221 Longwood Ave. work combined with the main campus work saves us over 2.2 million kilowatt-hours annually, enough energy to supply about 250 residential houses for a year,” BWH Engineer Jim Turner said.
With the update, the combined CO2 emissions are reduced by more than 1,000 tons yearly at the Medical Area Total Energy Plant.
Engineers have updated each of the florescent fixtures with new lamps and ballasts that reduce energy consumption by at least 28 percent. Incandescent lights were retrofit with compact florescent lamps, which deliver savings of 75 percent.
“Bob Grady and Brian Atkinson did an excellent job over at 221 on the lighting upgrade,” Rawlins Roopcharan, BWH Electrical Supervisor, said of two of the electricians working on the project. “David Leonard and Bob Conti also dedicated a lot of time.”
