Paul Savage, staff member at the Patient Access Services Desk, was behind the desk at 75 Francis St. when an elderly patient entered the lobby and began to slip. Savage ran to him and broke the fall by putting his arm underneath the man’s torso.
This kind act was recognized at last week’s Starfish Award Ceremony, where Savage and eight other award recipients were honored for exemplifying caring, respect, compassion, advocacy and mentorship.
Savage’s colleague Helen Thompson, supervisor of the Patient Access Services Desk, was awarded for her compassion and respect towards patients. Thompson helped a woman who became extremely ill to the restroom to be sure she didn’t faint.
“Paul and Helen both are true representatives of BWH and exhibit the mission and goals of the hospital,” said Donna Cutillo, executive assistant to the president, who nominated them for the award.
Each of this quarter’s nine awardees have made a difference to BWH patients.
Beth Baldwin, RN, of Tower 14AB, helped a homeless man feel at ease and in control when it came time to delouse, shave his beard and cut his hair. “She never made him feel dirty or isolated and was very compassionate in her approach,” said Marian Fitzgerald, RN, who nominated Baldwin.
Hazel Small, surgical coordinator in Otolaryngology, another Starfish recipient, drove a patient to her 6:30 a.m. surgery. “If that’s not above and beyond, I don’t know what is,” said nominator Valerie Moals-Phillips, medical secretary in Otolaryngology.
Other recipients who were honored for their compassion are Terri McBrayer-Hearns, patient care assistant at the Fish Center; Laura Clisbee, patient care assistant on Tower 12; Kerri Flynn, RN of Tower 5B; David Acker, MD, chief of Obstetrics; and Li-Li Hsiao, MD, PhD, of the Renal Division.
“I am very proud to work for an institution with such excellent individuals,” said Daphne Soto, administrative assistant for Real Estate Planning and Construction, who nominated Hsiao.
