April Lamrock and her supervisor Gloria Castro.
April Lamrock started her high school education at Health Careers Academy in Boston with a goal. “I’ve always wanted to be a pediatrician,” said Lamrock, whose commitment to her studies earned her class valedictorian and a five-year scholarship to Northeastern University.
Thanks to BWH’s Student Success Jobs Program (SSJP), Lamrock already has gained valuable experience in the hospital environment that will help her as she studies biology in the pre-med program at Northeastern. Through SSJP, she has worked for two years as a part-time unit coordinator in the NICU, learning from the best.
“I got to shadow a lot of doctors and nurses,” said Lamrock, who graduated from high school and the SSJP program this month. “I’ve watched nurses care for babies in the NICU, and I’ve seen deliveries in the Center for Labor and Birth.”
Lamrock is taking extra courses this summer at Northeastern to prepare for her studies this fall.
“April’s commitment, dedication and hard work exemplify her success in being valedictorian,” said Gloria Castro, operations supervisor in the NICU, who has seen Lamrock blossom through her work at BWH.
Sandy Harmon, BSN, RN, assistant nurse manager of the NICU, said, “It has been a pleasure to watch April grow and mature over the years.”
