BWH showcased its top-notch quality and safety initiatives to health care executives from the Netherlands, a country striving to revamp its health care system and improve its overall level of quality of care.
“The delegation was highly impressed by the quality and safety initiatives at our hospital,” said Michael Gustafson, MD, MBA, vice president for the Center of Clinical Excellence.
The Dutch delegation spent a full day with BWH leadership. Gustafson fielded questions about the staff, programs, departments and performance measurements. President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, discussed the health care system in the U.S. and the High Performance Medicine initiatives within Partners HealthCare System. Other presentations covered ambulatory patient safety strategies, electronic medication safety and the role of physician and nursing leadership.
During the trip to the U.S., Dutch health care executives also visited Johns Hopkins Medical Center, the Leap Frog Group, National Quality Forum, the VA Health System and CMS /Medicare in Washington, D.C., before making their way to Boston. While in town, they visited Harvard Business School, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Partners HealthCare and Harvard Vanguard in addition to BWH.
