A new summer day camp on Boston Harbor’s Long Island serves 600 kids from Boston with a fully equipped infirmary, thanks to BWH and Partners HealthCare Community Benefit Programs.
Camp Harbor View was officially dedicated last month by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Partners Board Chair Jack Connors and officials from the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston. The summer camp began its first session July 2 hosting a group of boys and girls ages 11 to 14 from neighborhoods across the city.
“Camp Harbor View is the result of great work by an extraordinary group of people who want to help a bunch of kids have a great summer,” Connors said. “Over the course of the next eight weeks, we hope to bring them joy, inspire them to dream, give them confidence – and perhaps even change a life or two.”
BWH and MGH are providing $100,000 in financial support and clinical expertise and are essential partners in the delivery of health care at the camp. BWH’s Paula McNichols, executive director of Brookside Community Health Center, and Jo-Anne Dillman, RNC, NP, of Brookside, drew on their experience running Brookside’s school-based health center at English High School to assist in the design of the infirmary, develop and train the camp nurse and director on the camp’s medical policies, on-call clinical consultation and provide medical supplies and equipment.
The estimated $1,700-per-child cost to run the camp is being raised from ongoing corporate and private donations. Campers will be charged $5 for a four-week session. Connors has donated the first $2 million and is spearheading the effort to raise $10 million.
