The BWH Burn Team was thrilled that two family members of a patient at BWH will attend the World Burn Congress next month free of charge to learn how to care for their family member.
Their scholarship is thanks to funds raised by the first New England Area Walk for Burns last year. Proceeds from the walk benefit the Phoenix Society, a national non-profit organization that provides peer support, education and advocacy for burn survivors. Next month, the Tower 7 burn care team will once again add its enthusiastic stride to the walk.
“We are thrilled to participate in this walk for the second year in a row,” said Bohdan Pomahac, MD, plastic surgeon and associate director of the BWH Burn Center. “The funds we raise for the Phoenix Society come back to benefit our patients and their family members in helping them cope with the long-term struggles of burn survivors.”
Providing scholarships to the World Burn Congress is one of the ways the Phoenix Society helps burn survivors and their families cope. The congress is a three-day annual conference for burn survivors, family members and burn professionals that offers support and guidance for recovery of traumatic burn injuries.
Colleen Macner, PT, and Dawn Quintino, RD, are leading the BWH team of more than 20 people. In order to raise funds, the team is selling raffle tickets and recruiting walkers. All are invited to join. The walk starts at Artesani Park on Soldiers Field Road at 10 a.m. on Oct. 14. The cost is just $10 per walker.
