Whenever Linda Oliveira, office manager for the adult Hematology Oncology fellows at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, is riding in a car, on her lunch break or relaxing at home, she knits caps. This year, she set her own record for knitting: 525 hats. She gave them to Caps for Kids, which donates warm weather accessories to those in need.
“To see the kids get so excited over a hat is very special,” she said as a group of kindergarten students at the Tobin School dug into boxes of hats in all shapes, sizes and colors last week.
Caps for Kids this year donated 5,774 hats, scarves, mittens, booties and more to six Boston elementary schools, two preschools, 15 community health centers, Head Start and homeless programs as well as newborns in BWH’s nurseries. BWH and DFCI teamed up to bring in caps from individual volunteers and knitting groups, led by Joan Casby, PT, of BWH, and Candace Lowe, ScD, of DFCI.
Lowe said knitters work year round to donate their work. Each cap is tagged with a note that says who made it especially for the recipient.
Casby said the effort grows each year, and donations are accepted year-round. “We’ll find a head for every hat!” she said.
