The BWH NICU Strollers team raised more than $19,000 for the March of Dimes during the organization’s March for Babies walk last month.
“Many of the same NICU graduate families have come back to join us for each of the three years we’ve done this. Their commitment to the cause is steadfast year after year, which is great,” said Paul Hughes, administrator for Newborn Medicine and a member of the March of Dimes Board of Directors.
Despite the cool, damp weather, more than 50 people walked for the NICU Strollers, including many NICU graduate families, doctors, nurses, physical therapists and others from the NICU. The Strollers were one of 120 teams who came together to raise money for the March of Dimes, which aims to improve the health of babies and prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. The March of Dimes also connects parents and families with resources as they transition from hospital care to home with their infant.
“One of every eight babies is born prematurely, and some of these babies may live with lifelong side effects. The March of Dimes and this effort are all about tackling those issues,” said Hughes.
Teams affiliated with BWH included those from Newton-Wellesley Hospital, MGH, Children’s Hospital and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.’s Walk America team, led by BWH clinical researcher Jonathan White. Combined with the Strollers, the groups associated with BWH raised about $28,000.
“The best part of the day is seeing grandparents, parents and children all coming together with the hospital staff who cared for them,” Hughes said, adding that some family teams paid tribute to the BWH NICU and obstetricians with T-shirts they created and wore during the walk.
BWH’s Marketing and Perks departments provided goodies for those stopping by the BWH tent. Highlights for families included a band, activities for kids, clowns and freebies, all in the name of a great cause.
