Audra Robertson, MD, MPH, Joe Camillus, MBA, MPH, and Tim Lynch, MBA, have something in common. They credit mentors and a willingness to challenge themselves as the key ingredients for achieving their career goals.
Last week, the three BWH leaders told employees details about their career paths and encouraged them to follow their own career goals during the third annual Association of Multicultural Members of Partners (AMMP) Networking Event.
“Be passionate about what you do,” said Robertson, clinical director of the Birth Equity Initiative and instructor in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, who was the event’s keynote speaker. “With a passion to motivate you, mentors to guide you and dedication to honing your skills and cultivating relationships, you create for yourself the opportunity to be successful.”
Each year, the event serves as a way for AMMP members and BWH staff to network and receive information on furthering their career goals. In addition to Robertson’s speech, the event also included a panel discussion where Camillus, Lynch and Robertson shared their stories and answered questions.
Camillus, administrative director of the Department of Emergency Medicine, advised those in attendance to seek out help, especially from their managers. “This is a magnificent teaching institution. People are willing to help if you are willing to listen,” said Camillus, a 2007 Deland fellow who previously served as a senior consultant with responsibility for development of the cardiovascular service line.
Lynch, administrative director of the Department of Neurology, spoke of the many mentors who have helped him in his 10 years at BWH, which include various positions such as operations supervisor in Surgery, project manager in Primary Care and practice administrator in Neurology.
“No matter what position you take on, give it your all and keep on learning, develop give-and-take relationships along the way, maintain a sense of balance between work and home priorities, and have fun doing it,” Lynch added.
