Pharmacist Heather Dell’Orfano draws from her professional experiences to mentor both first- and second-year pharmacy residents, but a new Workforce Development mentoring program is providing her with new tools and guidance for even better mentoring.
“The program provides an opportunity to ask questions, share our experience and learn about others’ perspectives on mentoring,” she said.
To help foster effective mentoring at BWH, Workforce Development is teaming up with departments across the hospital for a new program that pairs members within a department to learn and share leadership skills.
“The goal of this program is to enhance the transition of mentees into professional positions, but most importantly, to build on the culture of mentoring here at BWH,” said Geoff Vercauteren, RCC, JCDC, director of Workforce Development.
Departments can enroll mentors and mentees, and Workforce Development will provide tools and skills to enhance that relationship and provide support during the year. The multi-pronged program supports one-on-one mentoring, team mentoring, group mentoring and peer mentoring.
The program is designed to teach BWHers the skills of mentoring and enhance existing mentoring programs, as was the case with the Pharmacy, said Vercauteren.
This month, the first group of about 16 staff from the Pharmacy and Transport Services attended a kick-off mentoring workshop where they learned about roles, responsibilities and best practices in mentoring led by Stacy Blake-Beard, PhD, an associate professor of management at Simmons College, and Regina O’Neil, PhD, academic director of MBA Programs at Suffolk University.
“It’s important to note that departments don’t have to do it alone. Partnering with WFD can lead to improve upon and standardize something already in place.” said Vercauteren.
