Members of the BWH Department of Social Work
The BWH Department of Social Work is joining social workers across the country to celebrate the profession and acknowledge the important work they do to help patients through difficult and challenging times.
This year’s national celebration theme is “Social Workers Inspire Community Action,” and the BWH department has done its share, highlighting their work in Ambulatory Services.
This year alone, the department expanded social work services and resources to the Ambulatory Care Center at 850 Boylston St. and 221 Longwood Ave. It began providing services at Brigham and Women’s/Mass. General Health Care Center at Foxborough. Another milestone for the department was the redesign of services in the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center to ensure timely intervention in providing psychosocial services and continuity for cancer patients and families. Social workers also helped launch the BIMA Health Partnership, an intensive case management program for high-risk BIMA patients with medical and psychiatric co-morbidities.
And the work didn’t stop there. When an earthquake struck Haiti in January, social workers joined forces with the Employee Assistance Program and Chaplaincy to offer support to employees who were affected.
“This is such an outstanding group of professional social workers. They bring clinical skill, dedication and excellence to our patients and families who are coping with complex medical and psychosocial issues,” said Social Work Director Martha Burke, MSW, LICSW. “The interventions they provide each and every day are offered with great skill and compassion. They are truly awe-inspiring. It is an honor and privilege to lead such an extraordinary group.”
During this month’s celebration, the department hosted several events which will culminate with David Silbersweig, MD, chair of the BW/F Department of Psychiatry, presenting “The Social Brain: Where Social Work Meets Neuropsychiatry,” during Social Work Grand Rounds, March 24, 1:30 – 3 p.m., in the Bornstein Amphitheater.
