Edith Swain doesn’t consider herself a shy person, but speaking before a large crowd makes her nervous. Support and guidance from the newly formed BWH Toastmaster International chapter is helping her become comfortable speaking in public.
“The group is very supportive, and it’s open to all hospital employees,” said Swain, a research assistant in the Division of General Medicine.
Last month, Swain and about 25 other BWHers came together to launch the BWH Toastmaster International chapter, which welcomes new members and meets the first and third Tuesday of each month, 4 – 5 p.m.
Toastmaster International is a world renowned group that helps members become effective communicators, whether they are speaking one-on-one or before a large crowd. During meetings, participants practice and learn skills by giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one or serve as the group’s timer, evaluator or grammarian.
An initiative of HR’s Organizational Development & Learning, this group aims to give BWH staff the tools to be successful both in and outside of work, said Angela Crutchfield, OD&L director.
“We’re very pleased that so many staff are taking advantage of this group,” said Crutchfield. “It’s a great opportunity to expand their skills and is beneficial no matter what career path they are on.”
Anyone interested in joining the group should e-mail Swain at eswain@partners.org or call 617-732-4203.
