There’s still time to join or form a team and get in stride with the likes of The Pacemakers, Heart of the Hospital and The Heart Steppers—three of the 17 BWH teams already signed up for the Sept. 11 Boston Start! Heart Walk.
“The walk is a wonderful community event and truly something special to participate in,” said BWH co-captain Sharon Cohen of the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization.
The walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association, has raised millions of research dollars for Boston hospitals over the years, and BWH has received the most funding with almost $10 million this past year.
On Saturday, Sept. 11, BWHers will be among more than 12,000 people gathered at the DCR Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade to fight heart disease and stroke. These diseases are the nation’s number one and number three killers claiming more than 93,000 lives per year—more than the next seven leading causes of death combined.
“We hope that BWH employees will join us in helping the American Heart Association raise funds for cardiovascular research, advocacy and education—certainly a cause close to our own hearts,” said BWH co-captain Jose Rivero of the Cardiac EchoLab. “Our goal is to raise at least $63,794 this year, which would put BWH at the half million mark with funds raised since 2002.”
