The BWH and Harvard Medical School community celebrated Women in Medicine month this September with an event featuring guest speaker Ellen Zane, former network president for Partners HealthCare System, who played a vital role in establishing Partners' Office for Women's Careers.
"If there is something I want you to take out of today, it's that every decision you make involves risk," said Zane, president and chief executive officer of Tufts Medical Center, who has held several leadership positions during her career in health care. "But doing something out of your comfort zone, doing something risky, has a tremendous effect on your career."
Zane shared career tips about being a leader and mentor and answered questions from the audience.
She also spoke about handling insurmountable challenges. "I didn't always know how I was going to do it, but I knew what had to be done," Zane said to a diverse crowd of clinical, administrative and research staff. "There is something gratifying in taking on something so challenging and using every management skill in order to succeed."
The Office for Women's Careers and the Consortium of Harvard Affiliated Offices for Faculty Development and Diversity co-host this event every year to recognize the accomplishments of women in medicine, but this year was particularly special, as Zane led the way to establishing the Partners OWC in 1998.
"She was instrumental in the establishment of the Office for Women's Careers, and she continues to support the advancement of women as a mentor and role model," said Carol C. Nadelson, MD, director of the Partners Office for Women's Careers at BWH.
