On Feb. 29, Rebekah and Nino Sylvia welcomed their second child, Veronica Lee Sylvia, into the world.
A few hours after the delivery at BWH, Rebekah’s email inbox and voicemail were flooded with messages of congratulations on Veronica’s birth, as well as inquiries on how the Sylvias will handle the unusual birthday in years to come.
“We don’t know yet. All I know right now is that they are called ‘Leapsters,’” she said. “A friend already sent me an email with countless facts about Leapsters and links to online communities.”
According to published reports, nearly 187,000 people are born each Leap Day in the U.S. Some states do not recognize Feb. 29 as a birth date, and parents must choose between Feb. 28 and March 1. In Massachusetts, however, Feb. 29 is an accepted date of birth, according to the state’s website.
As far as celebrating Veronica’s first birthday, the Sylvias are puzzled, but they know one thing for sure: “Every four years, we’ll do something fun and unique,” Rebekah said.
