BWH's Biomedical Research Institute (BRI) named Richard Blumberg, MD, chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endoscopy, its new co-director.
Blumberg will serve alongside BRI Director Christine Seidman, MD, who is also director of the Cardiovascular Genetics Center. He will join Seidman, former BRI Director Joseph Loscalzo, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Medicine, Barbara Bierer, MD, senior vice president of Research, and Jacqueline Slavik, PhD, BRI executive director, on the BRI Executive Committee, which is responsible for directing the BRI and representing the BWH research community inside and outside of the hospital.
A professor at Harvard Medical School, Blumberg heads a lab that studies pathways of mucosal immunity. His specific research interests include infections of the digestive tract, inflammatory bowel disease and cancer mechanisms associated with inflammation. As co-director, he will continue to champion the BRI's mission to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery through the fostering of groundbreaking, interdepartmental and interdisciplinary research within the hospital's research community.
Blumberg earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed fellowships in infectious diseases and gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, respectively.
The BRI encompasses all members of the BWH research community, including but not limited to physician-scientists, research administrators, nurses, research fellows and staff, across all departments. It includes eight disease-focused research centers and five resource- and technology-based programs that develop and support collaborative research initiatives.
