Mr. Louis and Mrs. Anne Bornstein, late BWH patients and donors
From grand rounds and Town Meeting to BWH Research Day and other BluePrint events, Bornstein Amphitheater is home to many of BWH's weekly, monthly and annual events and gatherings. Located at the heart of the hospital-just off the Main Pike near the 45 Francis St. lobby-the stadium-style Bornstein (pictured at right) seats about 190 people. Its walls are adorned with larger-than-life colorful paintings of BWH's past medical and surgical leaders and renowned BWHers.
But how did the prestigious room get its name?
In June 1993, the previously unnamed "Main Amphitheater" became the Louis Bornstein Family Amphitheater in honor of a generous $1 million gift from Mr. Louis and Mrs. Anne Bornstein, of Brookline.
"In selecting the hospital as the recipient of their altruism, the Bornsteins cited the ‘wonderful care' they received from Marshall Wolf, MD, for close to 25 years, and the fine care that Lee Goldman, MD, provided their son-in-law," according to a June 17, 1993 BWH Bulletin article.
Mr. Bornstein, who died in Jan. 2001, graduated from Boston University in the 1920s and was the founder of Louis Bornstein Carpet Co., a floor-covering company which he owned and operated for years.
"Nothing impressed us more than this amphitheater," said Mr. Bornstein in the article. "We like that it has high-technology features and is used to train residents."
Mrs. Bornstein, who died in Aug. 2011, said: "It's very gratifying to be able to give back when we feel we've received so much."
Continuing the family's legacy are daughter Sybil Sheinkopf and her husband, Bob, longtime friends to BWH. As the hospital grows, Bornstein will remain a space where the BWH community will come together, share innovative research and teach and inspire the next generation of clinicians, researchers and staff.
