Manson Named Co-director of the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology
Chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine and Professor of Medicine, HMS JoAnn E. Manson, MD, DrPH, has been named co-director of the Connors Center for Women’s Health and Gender Biology. Manson will work alongside Paula Johnson, MD, MPH, executive director of the Connors Center and chief of the Division of Women’s Health in the Department of Medicine, to advance BWH’s clinical, teaching and research initiatives related to Women’s Health.
“I am very pleased and excited about working with Paula Johnson as co-director of the Center,” said Manson. “My primary goal in this new role will be to build upon BWH’s strong foundation in women’s health research and help bring together talent from across the institution to strengthen interdisciplinary research collaborations,” she said.
One of these collaborations is already underway. Transitioning into her new leadership role, Manson worked to coordinate and help write a Specialized Center of Research proposal on sex and gender factors that affect women’s health. The proposal represented a cross-disciplinary collaboration between the BWH Division of Preventive Medicine, Channing Laboratory and the Harvard School of Public Health.
Continuing to apply her strengths and expertise in preventive medicine, Manson hopes to build upon BWH’s existing resources, such as the Nurses’ Health Study, Women’s Health Initiative and Women’s Health Study and create new opportunities to develop expanded research initiatives.
Together with Johnson, Manson will play a key role in shaping BWH’s future in Women’s Health by recruiting and mentoring faculty with an interest in women’s health and gender biology. “All of our efforts will be focused on improving the health and well being of women and reducing health disparities among both women and men,” Manson said.
“JoAnn brings many years of experience and leadership to this pivotal role,” said Johnson. “This is a very exciting step for the Center as we work collaboratively to meet the hospital’s mission and carry out its tradition of excellence in providing the highest quality care and conducting groundbreaking research to advance women's health.”
