Brigham and Women's Hospital supports a safe and healthy environment for its patients, employees and visitors, and is therefore a non-smoking institution. Recognizing that smoking is a potential fire and health hazard, the hospital prohibits smoking on hospital property except for two designated outdoor smoking areas—the courtyard off the Main Pike and the smoking enclosure adjacent to the West Plaza Loading Dock. The "No Smoking" signs located inside and outside the hospital apply to all staff, patients and visitors. Employees are informed of the policy during their orientation and patients receive information about the policy during their admitting/registration process. For more details, refer to the no smoking policy in the Environmental Health and Safety Manual.
