Calling for All Ideas to Improve Care with Technology
With an initiative to build on Brigham and Women’s rich tradition of improving patient safety, care quality and operational efficiency through technology, the hospital is seeking new ideas to improve care.
The BW/F Clinical Advisory Council and the BW/F Clinical Executive Committee have launched the BW/F Health Care Information Technology Innovation Program, or HIP. Staff are encouraged to submit proposals that will improve patient care through technology.
“Through this program, we aim to support fresh, new ideas, and provide the resources to develop and test them as we continually challenge ourselves to effect meaningful improvement in the way we deliver care,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA. “Too often, innovative ideas are left unexplored. This program will allow us to open new doors of discovery.”
The hospital is committing $750,000 to support new ideas during its first year. Successful proposals will receive $50,000 to $100,000 to support development and staff, including Information Systems staffing resources.
The HIP selection committee, overseen by the BW/F Clinical Advisory Council and co-chaired by Eric Poon, MD, MPH, IS director of Clinical Informatics, and Sanjay Pathak, vice president, of Surgical Services and Imaging, will review proposals and recommend projects for funding to the BW/F Clinical Advisory Council. Recommended priorities for proposals include improving patients’ experience, clinical decision support, data mining and secondary use of data, novel ways to capture clinical data, personalized medicine and clinician education.
The application process has two steps. Applicants should submit a three-page, double-spaced preliminary proposal for initial review to epoon@partners.org by Sept. 30. Participants will be notified within 21 days, and project proposals that qualify for second-round review will require additional materials. The submission process is detailed online at www.bwhpikenotes.org/InformationServicesActivities/HIP.asp
