eMAR Implementation Arrives on Tower 14
A simple, 20-minute computer training session for BWH's landmark electronic medication administration record (eMAR) is now available to physicians on their own PCs in advance of the Electronic Medication Administration System launch on Tower 14 and other floors.
The eMAR rollout is a national first in patient safety as BWH leads the way with this comprehensive system linking medication order entry, pharmacy and medicine administration in one seamless electronic record.
Effective March 7, Tower 14 nurses and physicians will use eMAR exclusively for ordering, administering and monitoring prescriptions. “The plan is to implement eMAR in the Tower by starting in General Medicine on 14, then spreading it unit by unit,” Robert C. Goldszer, MD, MBA, associate chief medical officer, said.
“As we have seen in the Connors Center, eMAR brings a significant advantage for patient safety. Physicians and nurses will be looking at computer screens instead of books to get a patient's medication information, which will be more precise and accessible at the point of care,” Goldszer said.
The November transition to eMAR on Connors Center floors eight through 10 was met with rave reviews, according to clinicians there. “For one of the most profound improvements in the way we prescribe and administer medicine, eMAR is one of the least difficult changes for us as doctors,” said obstetrician/gyne cologist James A. Greenberg, MD.
All physicians should take advantage of the streamlined, computer-based training model to learn the eMAR system. Doctors can find the training session on their own PCs by clicking Start > Partners Applications > Clinical References > CBT Courses > eMAR CBT.
