BWH Utilization Management Makes Financial Strides
Utilization Management is an important piece of BWH's financial strategy. “We are focused on examining patient experiences and out-comes and then providing the best experiences and outcomes possible in the most efficient manner,” said Robert C. Goldszer, MD, MBA, associate chief medical officer and director of Primary Care. “Achieving our financial goals is crucial to maintaining out excellence and reinvesting in the future.”
Specifically, the utilization management group is examining BWH use of medications, radiology imaging, blood management and materials management.
“In the past year, we have made some great advances,” Goldszer said. Pharmacy has realized a savings of more than $350,000 from expected costs through various improvements such as using darbypoetin, improved dosing of ondansetron, antibiotic prescribing review, and using new guidelines with neseretide and argatroban.
The hospital also has realized significant efficiencies in Radiology and the Bloodbank.
“We are always looking for new ideas to evaluate and implement and for BWHers to assume leadership roles in effecting changes,” Goldszer said.
