BISP Committee Guides IS Projects
With representation from the hospital's vice presidents and BWH IS management, the Brigham Information System Prioritization (BISP) Committee meets monthly to discuss, approve and prioritize technology requests from all corners of BWH and then maps out implementation.
In September, IS completed the BISP-approved project to enhance the Emergency Department's patient tracking system. IS added tabs to the ED's system to follow patients' geographic locations during a surge in traffic when all the beds are filled.
"This enhancement to our patient tracking system facilitates communication when the ED is at or over capacity, and it certainly will expedite handling ED surge from a potential mass casualty incident," Bill Briggs, RN, MSN, CEN, Emergency Medicine nurse manager, said.
Formed in 2000, the BISP Committee receives five to 10 project requests each month and can have 40 to 50 projects at various stages of approval and priority at any given time. Partners considers it a best practice and duplicated it at BWH's sister institutions.
In addition to handling specific projects deemed minor relative to major IS initiatives like BICS modernization, BISP members offer recommendations on major initiatives to BWH's Operations Group and serves as both a sounding board and champion for various projects.
Sue Schade, chief information officer, co-chairs the committee with Robert Goldszer, MD, MBA, associate chief medical officer and director of Primary Care.
