Presentations and Publications
A poster developed by Hematology/Oncology nurses called, "Including Patients and Families as Part of a Team Approach to Fall Prevention," was presented at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's 25th annual National Forum on QI in Health Care in December. Staff who worked on this poster include: Marsha Milone, MSN, RN; Sarah Bifulco, BSN, RN; Jackie Hatch, BSN, RN; Caitlin Guerrero, BSN, RN; Kristen Connolly, BSN, RN; Michaelle Renard, MS, RN; Marissa Thomas, BSN, RN; Meg Vidal, BSN, RN; Brett Glotzbecker, MD; Anne McDonnell, Pharm D; Shawna Pierce, PT; and Escel Stanghellini, MSN, RN, CPHQ.
Elizabeth Buckley, BSN, RN, of Tower 15CD, presented at the National Study on Infusion Pumps hosted by AAMI in Arlington, VA. Buckley is involved in a research project investigating the errors associated with Smart Pumps and identifying areas for improvement to keep patients safe.
Doreen Harvey, BSN, RN, CCM, NC-BC, and Constance McManus, MBA, BSN, RN, ACM, of the integrated Care Management Program, presented the poster entitled, "Integrating RN Care Coordinators into Brigham and Women's Health Care Primary Care Practices - A Model of Care for Medically Complex Patients," at the first annual BWH Innovation Day.
Doreen Harvey, BSN, RN, CCM, BC-NC, Lynn Oliver, RN, CCM, NC-BC, and Lisa Wichmann, MS, RN, ACM, NC-BC, all of the integrated Care Management Program, along with Care Transitions Nursing Program Director Ann Furey, MBA, RN, BC-NC, became board certified Nurse Coaches through the American Holistic Nurses Credentialing Corporation.
Elizabeth Scanlan, MSN, RN, BC, NP, completed a chapter on Pain Assessment for the "Comprehensive Review of Pain Medicine," published by Oakstone Institute.
Vincent Vacca, MSN, RN, CCRN, SCRN, nurse educator for the Neurosciences ICU, and Eileen McMahon-Bowen, BSN, RN, CNRN, of the Neurosciences ICU, published "Anaphylaxis - Time Critical" in the November issue of Nursing 2013. Vacca also delivered two recent presentations:
"My Acute Ischemic Stroke Patient is on Dabigitran - What do I need to know today?" at the Boston Chapter of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses annual educational conference "Brain Matters."
"Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA) or Stroke? Recognize, Assess, Treat, Evaluate" at the 34th annual Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital Neurorehabilitation
Conference on Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke and Other Neurologic Disorders.
Honors
Amy Rex-Smith, DNSc, RN, ACNS, BC, of Tower 14CD, received a $197,000 pilot grant from the National Cancer Institute to address disparities in cancer. The study, "A National Faith Community Atlas on End-of-Life (EOL) Spiritual Care: Informing a Religious Community Educational Intervention to Address End-of-Life Cancer Disparities," will focus on the influence of faith communities in end-of-life decision-making, specifically the role of the faith community nurse.
Meredith Scannell, MSN, RN, of the Emergency Department, has been appointed as Forensic Nursing Special Interest Group Facilitator of the Emergency Nurses Association. She will participate with a dynamic group of dedicated professionals to address national issues related to emergency nursing practice, emergency care and matters of the association.
Rosemary F. Zawia, BSN, RN, CCM, care coordinator in the integrated Care Management Program, was elected President of the Case Management Society of New England, effective 2013-2015.
Appointments
Sharon Swan, MSN, RN, is the new assistant nursing director of Tower 8. She previously was the nurse educator for Tower 8AB.
