New Scholarship Offers Opportunity for Neurosurgery/Neurology RNs
Boston College (BC) is offering a scholarship program for full or part-time graduate students to attend BC’s William F. Connell School of Nursing. Preference will be given to clinical Neurosciences nurses working at Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals, Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Enrolled graduate students working at the same institutions are also eligible for the program.
The scholarships are funded through an endowment on behalf of Kathleen Powers Haley and her husband, Steven R. Haley. The first scholarships will be available in
January 2005 for nurses taking master’s degree courses.
“Through this scholarship program, BWH neurosciences nurses have the opportunity for personal educational advancement leading to their application of new knowledge to their everyday care of patients at BWH,” said Nancy Kruger, DNSc, RN, chief Nursing officer at BWH. Kruger explains that as an increasing number of BWH nurses obtain graduate degrees and become more knowledgeable in research, many opportunities exist for them to work with BWH’s Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice to plan and conduct beneficial nursing research projects.
“The Haley’s are very clear about the importance of the nursing care and their gift recognizes the critical role of nursing care in promoting recovery,” added Kruger.
In 1997, Steve Haley had successful treatment by the interdisciplinaryneurosurgical team led by BWH’s Peter Black, MD. This experience led the Haley family to establish The Brain Science Foundation. With their latest gift to Boston College School of Nursing, the Haley’s continue to give back to the health care industry.
