Tangney, Blake and Illsley Join Team Brigham
Since 1998, Team Brigham members have logged thousands of miles in training runs and raised more than $2 million to support BWH’s community health efforts by running the 26.2-mile Boston Marathon. The money raised benefits programs run by the Office for Women, Family and Community Programs, including education and support for breast cancer patients and victims of domestic violence and the Student Success Jobs Program, a BWH after-school employment program to provide high school students valuable work experience.
This year, Team Brigham has set its most ambitious goal yet: $500,000. Each of the 133 team members, including 16 BWHers, pledge to raise a minimum of $2,500. Three BWH nurses are members of Team Brigham, and they need your support.
Julie Tangney, RN, Tower 16, is running her sixth Boston Marathon?—?her third as a member of Team Brigham. Her fundraising efforts consist of sending letters to family and friends, and posting a donation form on Tower 16. “I look forward to joining Team Brigham every year,” Tangney said. “I love to run as it is, and this great cause adds to my motivation to participate.”
Katie Blake, RN, CWN-5, is a first-time member of Team Brigham, and she joins the team with the 2000 and 2001 Boston Marathons on her resume. Working in Labor and Delivery inspired Blake to contribute to community health efforts in educating first-time moms from lower income backgrounds on infant safety and care. She is raising money through her personal Web site, letters to friends and family and door-to-door visits to neighbors. Blake is particularly passionate about Passageways, a BWH program committed to providing safety and protection to abused women and their children.
Denise Illsley, RN, CWN-5, made a last-minute decision to join the Team Brigham roster. She and Blake are co-workers, inspiring each other to the go the distance for patients and community health programs. Illsley always has been health conscious and interested in fitness. Before earning her RN, she was an aerobics instructor. She participates in spinning classes at her local gym and recently completed a half marathon. Her fundraising efforts for Team Brigham include setting up a donations Web site, sending e-mails to friends and family and passing out flyers to people at her gym.
