As most of us clinked champagne glasses and watched the Times Square ball drop as the clock struck 12 a.m., January 1, 2000, little Janessa Rodrigues had her own idea of bringing in the New Year. Janessa was born five seconds past midnight at BWH, making her the first baby in New England born in the new Millennium. She was 7 lbs. 13 oz., 19 inches long, and the first of many babies born on New Years Day at BWH. Proud parents Rosa and John Rodrigues of Brockton far from expected such an honor for their daughter. “I’m just happy she is healthy and she’s here. I didn’t care when she was born,” said Mrs. Rodrigues, 35, who was due to deliver on December 20 and had gone into labor the morning of December 31. “I didn’t expect all this attention,” Mrs. Rodrigues told an eager crowd of reporters at a press conference held on January 1 to announce Janessa’s arrival. Delivering obstetrician Gladys Gibbs, MD, and delivering nurse Deb Campbell, RN, anticipated Mrs. Rodrigues to deliver well before midnight. “I guess Janessa came into the world when she was ready,” said Dr. Gibbs. Janessa is the third consecutive New Year’s Baby to be born at BWH, where nearly 10,000 babies are born each year. BWH celebrated the Millennial birth by presenting the awestruck Rodrigues family with a Millennium basket of baby items as well as a $250 gift certificate to Toys R Us.
