For the 14th year in a row, BWHers, patients and their families, and hospital advocates will take on the challenge of a lifetime, and in the process raise money for BWH community health programs and services.
Team Brigham 2011 is made up of 105 members who will run the 115th Boston Marathon next month. This year's team includes 36 employees of BW/F-a record high.
Since it began in 1998, Team Brigham has been one of the largest sources of fund-raising revenue for community health programs including Passageway, Connecting Hope, Assistance and Treatment and the Student Success Jobs Program. About 1,300 marathon runners have raised close to $4.7 million to benefit community health programs. This year, the team's goal is to raise $500,000.
"Each year, team members commit to enduring the physical challenge of training for a marathon, but their commitment doesnÕt stop there. It continues as they dedicate themselves to contributing tirelessly to the hospital's community health programs," said Suzanne Leidel, director of Special Events for Development and the Team Brigham den mother.
This year"s team includes a mixture of first-time marathon runners and marathon veterans. More than half of the 2011 team-58 members-will be running their first marathon. The team is also made up of experienced runners, including 24 athletes who have already run between three to seven marathons.
Team Brigham 2011 is not limited to Massachusetts: members come from all over the country, including California, Minnesota and Texas, just to name a few. The team also has international members, originating from Canada and as far away as Hong Kong.
