Ideas and anticipation ignited the night on Nov. 3 when the BWH Biomedical Research Institute (BRI) held its 2011 Fall Research Excellence Awards event in Cabot Atrium. The biannual poster competition, which occurs in spring and fall, promotes the research of promising BWH junior investigators and trainees.
“I’m constantly amazed by the volume and quality of research at BWH,” said award recipient Jeffrey Cooney, technical research assistant in the laboratory of Barry Paw, MD, PhD, in the BWH Hematology Division. “The best thing about these events is that they give me the opportunity to learn something about a field very different from my own.”
Posters are grouped into categories representing the BRI’s research centers and programs. Of the 46 entries this session, faculty and peer judges awarded a total of seven participants whose research focused on cancer; cardiovascular, diabetes and metabolic disorders; infectious and immunologic diseases; regenerative therapeutics; and biomedical imaging. Winning posters covered topics such as developing hybrid nanoparticles to deliver chemotherapy to cancer cells and research on new vaccines that may protect people from certain skin infections.
BWH employees are eligible to enter the research poster competition as long as they have an academic rank of instructor or below. Previous award recipients have included scientists, physician-scientists, nurses and laboratory technicians.
“This was the largest turnout we’ve had since we split the session into two annually,” said Jacqueline Slavik, PhD, BRI executive director. “Participation from across the community reflected the breadth of research at BWH. We are especially grateful for our faculty judges taking time to participate in this event.”
Award recipients each received $1,000 for travel to a scientific meeting or research expenses.
The BRI has awarded more than $50,000 to promising research investigators since the event’s inception in spring 2007. In addition to competing for award money, the event also offers an opportunity for both competitors and judges to network outside of their research areas.
