BWH staff, philanthropists, city leadership and members of the community gathered for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the Brigham Patient Parking Garage and park at 15 Francis St.—a project that will change the face of Brigham Circle.
The landscaped park has been named the Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial Park, in recognition of the Stoneman family’s generous donation to BWH. When the project is complete in 2014, the park will restore the entrance of the historic Peter Bent Brigham building to its original appearance.
“The Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial Park will provide an inviting and comforting space for patients, employees and neighbors to relax and enjoy the outdoors,” said BW/F President Betsy Nabel, MD, during the May 30 ceremony. “Additionally, the Patient Parking Garage will provide much-needed parking in the Longwood Medical Area and make it easier for patients to access the world-class care we provide at the Brigham.”
The 400-space patient parking garage, which will be underground, will ease traffic congestion in the area by reducing the number of cars circling for parking spots on neighborhood streets. The project also includes 76 spaces for bicycle parking and an improved, covered MBTA bus stop at Brigham Circle.
“The Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial Park will be a great addition to bustling Brigham Circle, the Mission Hill community and the park system across Boston,” said Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “I’m also pleased that this project will create an underground garage and relieve neighborhood traffic congestion.”
