John A. Mannick Awards
Four BWH residents were honored during the ninth annual John A. Mannick Award ceremony held October 1 by the Department of Surgery. Named for John A. Mannick, retired Surgeon-in-Chief, the award recognized the residents’ work in basic science or clinical research with a cash award and commemorative plaque. Sebastian Schneeweiss, MD, ScD,
BWH Department of Medicine, received two four-year grants from the National Institute on Aging and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality totaling $2.6 million to study the clinical and economic consequences of drug reimbursement restrictions and test innovative strategies to combine quality medicine with cost control measures using randomized control groups. The results of this research will contribute to the ongoing discussion on Medicare drug coverage.
David Barry Sacks, MB, ChB,
BWH Department of Pathology, was invited to be the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia (RCPA) Visiting Professor for 2003. The RCPA Visiting Professorship is offered annually to a person with expertise in pathology, in order to present state-of-the-art education. As the 2003 Visiting Professor, Sacks will visit a number of centers and present lectures, seminars and teaching sessions to fellows and trainees in Australia.
Mark A. Rubin, MD, chief, Urologic Pathology,
BWH Department of Pathology, has received the 2004 United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) Young Investigator Award. This annual award was established to recognize a body of investigative work that has contributed significantly to the diagnosis and understanding of human disease. The award, which carries with it a $5,000 honorarium, will be presented to Rubin during the 93rd Annual USCAP Meeting on March 9, 2004 in Vancouver.
Edward M. Brown, MD,
BWH Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Hypertension, was recently presented the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) Louis V. Avioli Founders Award at the ASBMR Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Louis V. Avioli Founders Award honors an ASBMR member for their fundamental contributions to bone and mineral basic research and includes a $2,000 honorarium.

Roseanna Means, MD,BWH Department of Medicine and Sonya Shin, MD, BWH Division of Social Medicine and Health Inequalities, received 2003 Dean’s Community Service Awards, which celebrate the outstanding community service of Harvard Medical School (HMS) medical and dental students, faculty, staff, fellows and the partnerships that result. Means, an assistant clinical professor at HMS, was honored for her volunteer service in establishing Women of Means, Inc., a nonprofit organization providing safe, respectful, and barrier-free health care to women who are homeless or marginally housed in the city of Boston. Shin was recognized for her work with the Prevention and Access to Care and Treatment (PACT) project, a community-based project in Boston that is committed to improving health outcomes for medically under-served individuals at high risk for HIV infection and with HIV disease. The awards were presented during Ebert Community Service Day on October 30.
