Dear Colleagues:
BWH’s Department of Marketing and Planning has been leading the effort to map out a Strategic Plan for Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals (BW/F) in concert with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The process is in its final phase and the plan will be unveiled in the coming months. The Strategic Plan will set BW/F on the right course to attain its recently revamped vision, all the while maintaining the strong missions of both hospitals.
This plan has been formulated to this point through the hospital’s Strategic Planning Council, task forces, advisory groups and specific departmental work. It focuses on the growth of five Centers of Excellence-Cancer, Cardiovascular, Neurosciences, Orthopedics and Arthritis and Women’s Health. These service lines account for three out of every four discharges and a significant portion of ambulatory care. However, such expansion will also be supported by maintaining our core and key services, including hospital-based and specialty services, which account for one-quarter of our inpatient volume and a substantial portion of outpatient business.
Growth is needed to meet margin targets necessary to support BW/F current and future infrastructure. Lengths will be taken to fully optimize resources across our distributed campus with BWH, Faulkner, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and 850 Boylston. An emphasis on developing network relationships, incorporating innovation efficiently into our delivery system, and differentiation through service excellence, our workforce and systems integration are also key components of our plan.
We will rely on the leadership of department chairs and division chiefs and the energy of all clinicians and researchers in moving forward the road map associated with this Strategic Plan. More specifics will be shared in the coming weeks regarding next steps.
Sincerely,

Andy Whittemore, MD
Chief Medical Officer
